KIRKENES (Norway) 18 April 2024 – The 2024 FIM Snowcross World Championship reaches its icy conclusion this weekend in the north-eastern corner of Norway, near the Finnish border at the purpose-built VM Arena Kirkenes, which held the only round of the Championships this year. This event will complete the first three-round series in Snowcross’ young history and will attract a stellar entry in the heartland of the sport.
The Championship could not be closer in the headline event as Polaris pilot Jesse Kirchmeyer from the USA is level on 99 points with Norway’s Magnus Reiten, who will enjoy some serious fan support on his Lynx machine as he tries to become the first ever Norwegian to claim the men’s world title on home snow!
Those two riders, who shared the race wins at the opening round in Turkey, hold a 30-point gap over Swede Martin Johansson, with another Norwegian, Robert Lunden, just 5 points further behind and looking to challenge his fellow Ski-Doo racer for the bronze medal. They both need to watch over their shoulder, however, as reigning Champion Aki Pihlaja will be on fine form at the venue where he won the world crown last year. The Finn won last weekend’s event on his home snow at Joensuu, while his fellow Lynx pilot Emil Hansson from Sweden also took a race victory and now lies 6th in the standings.
The Norwegian fans will also be cheering a home heroine in the Women’s Snowcross World Championship, the first series with such a title after previously being called a World Cup, in the shape of Ski-Doo racer Malene Cottew! Last year’s winner at Kirkenes also had a flawless weekend at Joensuu, giving her a 9-point advantage over Swedish flyer Jenny Lundström, who is just one point ahead of fellow Lynx racer and Swede Wilma Jonsson.
The racing doesn’t end there, as the European Snowcross Championship will also come to a conclusion, and another Norwegian charger leads that series, in the shape of Emil Mikalsen, who won both races in Joensuu on his Ski-Doo machine. Swede Mille Andersson will look to spoil the party after finishing 2nd both times in Finland, and his countrymen Alfred Gunnarsson and Olle Sahlström will settle their dispute for the bronze medal as they come to Kirkenes equal in points!
Qualifying Practice and Races will take place on Friday the 19th of April, with the final two World Championship races concluding a thrilling series on Saturday the 20th! Make sure you check out this wild action with these crazy machines!
